Getting Started

Below is a non-exhaustive list of introductory and foundational texts related to the broad field of ceramics available at the BGC Library.

Searching the Catalog

  • When searching WorldCat Discovery for relevant books, try supplementing keyword searches with subject searches. You can do this by applying a subject filter after you've run a search, clicking on "Advanced Search" under the search bar and selecting “Subject” as the search index, or by clicking on subject heading links in item records:

  • Subject headings use consistent language, so they can help you find books that you might not discover through keyword searches alone. As you explore the catalog, you can make note of subject headings to try in future searches.
  • Below are some broad subject headings to consider when searching.
    • Ceramics
    • Pottery
    • Potters
    • Art pottery
    • Ceramic ware
  • Some subject headings may include geographic location, time period/era, technique, etc.:
    • Pottery, Chinese
    • Meissen porcelain
    • Pottery, European—18th century
    • Transfer-printing

Browsing the Stacks

  • In addition to searching the library’s online catalog, it’s important to also physically browse the stacks, as you could come across something that you might not otherwise have discovered through a catalog search.
  • Below are some call number ranges to consider as starting points:
    • NK3700-NK4695 Decorative Arts: Arts & Art Industries: Ceramics
    • NK3780-4184 Ceramics & History
    • NK4001-4185 Ceramics by Region
    • NK4370 Porcelain
    • TP785-869 Chemical Technologies: Clay, Ceramics, & Glass
    • TT919-924 Pottery Craft
  • Tip: WorldCat Discovery’s “Browse the Shelf” feature aims to recreate the experience of browsing the library in person by showing items with neighboring call numbers.
