Searching the Catalog

Users can search the catalog through the main WorldCat Discovery portal or the quick-search bar on the BGC Library page

We recommend signing in at the beginning of your search to ensure you have seamless access to resources and to take advantage of your patron account features.

Filters

Search results can be refined by applying a range of filters available on the left of the page, including Held By Library, Format, Publication Year, Content Type, Subject, Language, and Author.

The Retain Filters option in the upper-left corner is selected by default, meaning any selected filters will apply to subsequent searches. Filters can be removed individually or by clicking on Clear Filters.

Searching Bard Graduate Center Library

By default, a catalog search will retrieve print items and eResources available through Bard Graduate Center Library.

Records for print items owned by BGC include information about their availability, shelving location, and call number.

Browsing the Shelf

At the bottom of the page for items owned by BGC, the Browse the Shelf feature shows items with neighboring call numbers.  This aims to recreate the experience of browsing the library in person, though you might notice that it includes items from different shelving locations, as in the following screenshot.

Requesting Access

Some library items need to be pulled by a librarian before you can access them.  This includes Special Collections and Theses, which require appointments, but also materials like Videos, Auction Catalogs, and Microform.

For items in these locations, scroll down to the Availability table for the Request Access link and fill out the resulting form:

Searching NYC Libraries and Libraries Worldwide

To search beyond our collection, you can use the Held By Library filter to expand to holdings at NYC Libraries and Libraries Worldwide, with results sorted by proximity. To see which libraries hold an item, open the record, scroll down to the section titled “Other Availability & Holdings” and click on "Other Libraries Worldwide."

Note: If no local libraries have the item you're looking for, you might want to submit an Interlibrary Loan Request. In the "Access Options" section of the record, simply click on the "Request an Interlibrary Loan" button, which will take you to the request form.

Study Collection Search

While we work on incorporating Study Collection objects into WorldCat Discovery searches, you can search Study Collection holdings and images through JSTOR. If you have any questions, please contact Study Collection Manager Barb Elam.
